Track your receipts using only a camera phone

This cell phone inspired hack is designed to help you keep track of receipts. The beauty of the system is that it's paperless, really simple, doesn't require any software and anyone with a camera phone and a Multimedia Messaging (MMS) plan can do it.

  • Take a picture
  • Send an email to an address set up just for this purpose. In the subject of the email, put the date - month first (actually write it out).
  • In the body of the email put the name of the store and any more information that might be important, like the name of the items, especially if it was a big purchase.

I like using GMail because their archive feature remove emails from the inbox to a storage folder - out of sight. The way I use this system is that I only open an email when it's time to put it in my finance/ budgeting software (I use Clearcheckbook.com). That way I know unopened emails haven't been entered yet.
