How to use ITunes to make free ringtones for your cell phone

Cellphone music player Paying money for ringtones these days is like throwing money away. Here's a super simple way to make ringtones with ITunes, from songs that you already have on your computer. *Hint*: if you haven't done so already, make a folder on your computer called "ringtones" so all you can keep track of song clips that you use for your phone.

  • Open ITunes and pick the song you want to edit
  • Go to Edit » Preferences » advanced » Importing.
  • Set Import Using to MP3 encoder and Settings to Custom.
  • The mp3 encoder will pop up; choose a pretty low kbps, 80 to 128 (stereo) (because phone ringtones usually have a size limit). Click OK (twice).
  • Right click on the song you want to use as your ringtone and select Convert Selection to mp3. It will make a new copy of the song.
  • Right click again on the new song, and select Get Info. Go to the Options tag, and adjust the start and stop times until you have the desired clip (30 seconds or less).
  • Convert it to mp3 again (following the steps above), and it will make a new song from this smaller clip.
  • Right click on the new copy and save it to your ringtones folder.
  • Transfer the file to your PC via the software for your phone, such as PC Studio.

There is also a tutorial at RottenEggs.com and they have visual screenshots of most of the process.
