The tray at the bottom of your screen can be removed using PMC-TodayShrink (which is the same as vjtodaytoggle). This removes the display only and the soft keys can still be used to open the applications to which they are assigned. Another program that's also used is dciNoBar, but on my ATT Tilt, the on screen keyboard icon kept popping up at random times, so it was no good for me.
